At the beginning of the semester we were presented to choose a topic to write about the whole semester that was relating to landscapes of struggle. I went back and forth between topics until I finally settled on the topic of Native American Issues. I chose this because of my time spent living and serving a humanitarian mission in Hawaii among Native Hawaiians. Each piece I that has been chosen by me for the magazine was done because it directly related to my time spent in Hawaii or the Hawaiian people as opposed to Native Americans from the mainland.
The first piece that I chose is my Memoir. For this piece I revised it because the feedback that was offer I felt would make it a stronger paper and one of my strongest papers. It also offers a firsthand look at life of Native Hawaiians through my experiences. I think that it also show the reality of poverty with in our own nation as well. I revised it by connecting my experiences to events that happen to me during our public awareness campaign. I also included more dialogue and through the people I talked with explain why they are in their current situation.
The second piece I have placed into the magazine is an adaptation of my Profile into a photo essay. I felt this adaptation was most appropriate because pictures of the queen during this time of her imprisonment appeal to the emotions better than words. I also thought there was no better way to make visuals for the reader than through actual pictures.
Other pieces were left out because they were not focused on Native Hawaiians but Native Americans as a whole. An example would be my report which was on Native American poverty which does included Native Hawaiians but the two chosen above make Native Hawaiians the focal point.
